核心畫面

Think of something that will not bend. Press on it and nothing gives: no soft edge, no exception, no easier way round. That stiffness is what the Latin word behind rigour named, and every meaning here is that same hardness pointed somewhere else — at people, at the weather, at a course, or at your own working method.

From the word’s history

The source traces rigour through Old French rigor to Latin rigor, meaning stiffness, rigidity, cold and harshness, from rigere, to be rigid.

來源把 rigour 一路追到拉丁文 rigor(僵硬、堅硬、寒冷、嚴酷),再到動詞 rigere(發硬、不彎)。所以「硬到不肯彎」不是後人想出來的比喻,它就寫在這個字的來源裡,連「寒冷」那一支也一起留了下來。
