In American English this is the ordinary spelling of the word British books write as rigour. It names a hard, unsoft kind of strictness. In school and work talk, academic rigor means the work is careful and demanding, not easy or sloppy. People also use it for a harsh stretch of life: the rigor of training, the rigor of winter. It feels a little formal; in everyday speech people more often say strict or tough. Though actually, even in Britain the Latin phrase rigor mortis (the body going stiff after death) keeps this spelling — they do not write rigour mortis. And the adjective is rigorous on both sides of the ocean, with no extra u.
