Picture a room with one thing in it you no longer want — a broken chair, a smell, a guest who will not leave. Rid can be thought of as the state of that room once the thing is finally out and the space is clear again. This is why the word almost never stands alone: you meet it inside get rid of (the clearing out), be rid of (already clear), and want rid of (wishing it were clear).
