From Old French requerre, from Latin requīrō 'to seek again, ask for', from re- + quaerō 'to seek'.

源自拉丁文 requīrō，由 re-「再」加 quaerō「尋找」組成。

You can hold require as 'this thing cannot go without that thing.' Something is missing, and the situation simply will not work until it is supplied. A plant requires water; a job requires skill — the word points at a gap that has to be filled before things can proceed.

可以把 require 想成「少了它就不行」。某樣東西是缺不得的，情況非得補上它才走得下去——植物 require 水、一份工作 require 某種技能。核心畫面比較像指著一個必須先填上的缺口：不是「想要」，而是「沒有就動不了」。
