You can picture reddish as red seen through a thin haze: the colour clearly leans towards red, but never arrives at it. There is usually something else mixed in — brown, orange, gold — so you would not call it red outright, and yet red is the direction you would point in. The -ish ending is doing exactly that work, which is why reddish turns up for hair, soil, rust and evening skies rather than for a stop sign.
