Auburn is a colour, and people almost always use it for hair. It is brown with a clear red or warm copper light in it — not dark brown, not bright orange. 'Auburn hair' sounds natural; 'an auburn car' or 'an auburn wall' sounds a little strange, as if you were borrowing a hair word. The word feels a bit careful and . In everyday talk many people just say brown, or ginger if the hair is brighter. Though actually, auburn did not always mean this. Older English used it for a pale, almost blond colour. Later speakers mixed it with brown, and the meaning slid toward red-brown. Today, if someone says auburn, picture warm red-brown hair in a photo, a story, or a hair-dye name.
組成From Old French auborne, alborne ('blond, pale, off-white'), from Medieval Latin alburnus ('whitish'), from Latin albus ('white'). English later mixed it with brown, so the colour moved from pale yellow-white toward reddish brown.
