Bluish means a little blue, not fully blue. A , a shadow, a grey sky, a pale flame, or a white shirt that has been washed with jeans can all look bluish. It is a soft, hedging colour word: you are not ready to say “blue,” only “heading that way.” You will also see blueish; bluish is the usual spelling. Everyday and slightly descriptive, at home in speech and in writing. The -ish ending does this job with many colours: , , yellowish.
