A prepared track that runners, cars, bikes, horses or other racers race on. It is usually a closed loop with a marked start and finish line.

Think of a loop drawn on the ground and then built: one surface, edges you must stay inside, a line where the race starts and ends. The racetrack is that loop itself. Whatever runs on it — feet, wheels or hooves — the ground is what the word names.
