Picture a shape that pushes forward out of a flat surface — a ridge on a map, a chin, a bone under the skin. Because it sticks out, your eye lands on it first. Move that from bodies and buildings to people and places in a room, and you get the whole word: whatever is prominent is the thing that comes forward and gets noticed.
