Self-respect is the quiet feeling that you are a person worth treating well — by yourself and by other people. If you have it, you care about your character, your abilities, and what you believe, and you do not happily do things that would make you ashamed of yourself later. People say “have some self-respect” when they think you are letting others walk over you. Though actually, it is not the same as being proud or showing off. Pride can be loud; self-respect is more like a line you will not cross. It is an ordinary noun, not slang and not stuffy, and we treat it as a thing you can have, keep, or lose.
self-respect 是一種安靜的感覺，覺得自己值得被好好對待，不論是自己或別人對待你。它表現在你在意自己的品格、能力和信念，不會輕易做事後會讓自己丟臉的事。人家說「have some self-respect」，通常是覺得你讓別人一直欺負。它和驕傲或炫耀不一樣，驕傲可以很吵，自尊比較像一條不會跨過去的界線。它是很一般的名詞，可以擁有、保持，也可能失去。
