Picture something that has been sitting in liquid long enough for the liquid to be all the way through it. A that went into the jar green and crisp comes out sharp and salty, and it will keep for months. The thing is not just wet on the outside; it has been changed right through. English then lifts that same picture and lays it, as a joke, on a person who has had far too much to drink.
