Start with one shape — a ring, a stripe, a tile. Now pull the camera back until you can see that the shape keeps coming back, in order, across the whole surface. That pulling-back is what the -ing adds: patterning is not the shape, it is the repeating arrangement the shapes make. Some surfaces you can see, like a wing or a floor; one of them you cannot, because it is made of what people keep doing.

From the word’s history

From pattern + -ing.

這個字就是 pattern 加上 -ing。pattern 是一再出現的樣式,-ing 把重點推向「正在排、被排出來」。
