Think of a long word with its tail cut off. Paragraph is long, and people who write numbered documents need to point at one piece of text over and over, so the word gets to its front: para, then para 4, para 12, paras 6 to 8. The picture to hold is a marked-up page with numbers down the side.

Here the picture is a person, not a page: a soldier out of an aircraft door with a parachute on his back. Paratrooper is a mouthful, so the people who use it every day cut it down to its front, para, and use the plural paras because these soldiers move as a group.
