A kind of live show that was popular in theatres in the 19th and early 20th centuries, in which singers, dancers and people telling jokes each came on for a few minutes, one after another.

One way to hold this word: a room with a stage, and an evening built out of short turns. Somebody sings, somebody dances, somebody tells jokes, and the room sings along — then it starts again with the next act. From that one evening the word reaches in two directions: the style of show itself, and the building where it happens. Today the building has outlived the style, so a modern music hall is simply a hall for music.
