Start with a cut piece of marble: a pale, cool stone with darker lines wandering through it, never straight, never repeating. The word can point at either half of that picture. Point at the stone and it means the thing is made of marble. Point at the lines and it means the thing only looks that way — paper, glass, a piece of beef. The ending -ed can be read as carrying the look of, which is what lets one word cover both.
From the word’s history
The dictionary gives the whole word as marble plus -ed. Read the ending as carrying or bearing, and both uses follow directly: a thing carrying marble as its material, or a thing carrying marble's pattern.
