Granite is a very hard rock, often grey, sometimes pink, with little black and white . Builders use it for steps, walls, and kitchen tops because it does not wear down easily. In shops, people say granite for a shiny stone counter even when the stone is not true granite — they are stretching the word to mean hard fancy stone. You also hear it as a picture: a granite face, granite will — meaning very hard and not easy to change. The everyday meaning, though, is the rock.
