One way to hold this word: a label on a box that is promising you time. English often calls the period something keeps working, or keeps being usable, its life — so a long life is simply more of that period than usual. The word never says the thing is better; it says it stops later. Whether the thing stops by going flat or by going off depends only on what is in the box.
