If a product is hard-wearing, you can use it a lot — walk on it, wash it, rub it, carry it every day — and it still stays in good shape for a long time. It is a word for things, not people: shoes, school bags, sofa fabric, floor covering, work trousers. British English likes this word. In American English people more often say durable, which means the same idea. You usually put it before a noun: hard-wearing paint, hard-wearing carpet. Though actually, it does not mean the thing feels hard on your skin. A soft jumper can be hard-wearing if it does not go thin. And it is not the same as “hard to wear” (clothes that feel awkward). It is about lasting, not about comfort.
hard-wearing 形容的是物品能被大量使用，例如常走、常洗、常摩擦、常搬，還是能保持好狀態很久。它用在鞋子、書包、沙發布料、地板、工作褲這類東西上，不用來形容人。英式英文很常用這個字；美式英文較常說「durable」，意思相同。它通常放在名詞前，像「hard-wearing paint」（耐磨的漆）、「hard-wearing carpet」（耐磨的地毯）。
它不是指摸起來硬。一件柔軟的毛衣，只要不會很快變薄，也可以是耐穿的。它也不是指穿起來彆扭的衣服，重點在耐久，不在舒適。
