If something is short-lived, it is here and then it is gone — a fashion, a happy feeling, a company, a . It does not have to be about death. Their lead was short-lived just means they were ahead for only a little while. Though actually, when people say it about a person, it can sound as if that person's life was short, so we more often say it about things, plans, and feelings. The opposite is long-lived: something that lasts many years. Even the sound of the last part is a little messy: some people say it like lived (I lived there), and some closer to life. You will hear both. Older English had forms like short-livi; today we write short-lived.
「short-lived」指某件事出現一下就消失，例如一陣潮流、一段開心的感覺、一家公司，或一次停火。它不一定跟死亡有關。像 「Their lead was short-lived」（他們的領先只維持了一小段時間）這樣的句子，就是說他們只在很短的時間內領先。
用在人身上時，聽起來會像一個人活得很短，也就是中文的「短命」，語氣比較重，所以通常用在事物、計畫和感覺上。它的反義詞是 long-lived，指能持續很多年的東西。
