An attic is the space or room just under the roof of a house, often with a ceiling, old boxes, and heat in summer. Families store things they cannot throw away; in stories, secrets and trunks live there. In many Taiwan flats there is no true attic, so meet the word in British and American houses, children's books, and films. A loft can overlap: a loft may be opened up to live in, while attic still smells a little of storage and dust. Though actually the name did not start as the junk room. Builders used to dress the top storey of a building in the Attic style — the style of Attica, the land around Athens — and that top bit kept the name. The everyday word for is the space under the roof. Small attic is that room; capital Attic, in careful writing, points at Athens, which is a different use.
