Jersey is named after the Channel Island of Jersey, where this knitted woollen cloth was originally made for fishermen's sweaters and warm underwear. The fabric took the island's name, and the garments made from it (the sports shirt, the woollen pullover) then took the fabric's name in turn — so the cloth sense sits at the root of the word.
