high-tech 說的是「用上最新的技術」。這裡的 high 不是高度，是技術的層級高。它多半直接放在名詞前面。像 high-tech industry、high-tech equipment、a high-tech security system。重點是東西裡面的技術很新、很進步。它不保證好用，也不保證貴，只說技術層級。相反的說法是 low-tech，指用簡單、老方法做的東西。寫法上 high-tech 和 hi-tech 都有人用，來源說兩個是同一個字。

這個 high-tech 講的是外型。東西看起來像實驗室或工廠：線條乾淨，常用金屬、玻璃、白色，少有花樣。裡面不一定裝了什麼新技術。所以一張桌子可以是 high-tech 的，只因為它長那個樣子。設計、家具、室內裝潢的文章裡最常這樣用。怎麼分？句子在講材質、顏色、感覺，就是這個意思；在講功能、技術，就是另一個意思。
