Picture a table with nothing left on it. Whatever there was to take, one side has taken all of it — every trick, every trophy, every run that was on offer. That is what grand slam names. It is not a big win; it is the complete one, with nothing left over for anybody else. Each game then fills in what all of it means: all thirteen tricks in a hand, all four runners, all four tournaments in a year, all four honours in one race. The sweep is the constant, the list is what changes.
