    In baseball, a homer is a home run: you hit the ball so far that you can run to first, second, third, and all the way back to home, and your team scores. Fans shout it; radio and TV people say it too. Though actually, a careful written report may still say home run, because homer sounds like talk between people who already follow the game. Players also use it as a verb: to homer is to hit one. This is sports English, mostly American. It is not a word about your house, and it is not the name of the old Greek poet, even though it sounds the same.
