Fry (v.) "cook in oil" is from Old French frire, from Latin frigere "to roast, fry". Fry (n.) "young fish" is a separate word, from Anglo-French, probably from Old French frier/froier "to rub, spawn", with a possible link to Old Norse frjo/fraee "seed, offspring".
