To resent something is to feel angry or hurt about it, and to keep that feeling, because you think it is not fair. You can resent a person, a thing they did, or a whole situation. It is quieter than shouting. The anger sits inside and does not blow away in a minute. A child may resent a little who gets all the attention. A worker may resent being asked to stay late when others go home. It is a little careful in tone, but people use it in normal talk too. Though actually, you resent treatment, luck, or a person — something that feels and stays with you. A short flash of anger is more often I'm angry or that me. You do not resent a hard chair; you resent being left out, being talked down to, or being given less than others.
組成From older French ressentir / resentir, from re- + sentir (to feel). The old idea is to feel it again: the feeling comes back and stays. Not the same word as resend (to send again).
