A hunting dog's nose: it catches a scent nobody else can smell and goes straight to it. Flair started out as literally 'smell' — the sense of knowing where the thing is without being told. That sharp, untaught nose is the picture the modern word still carries.

From Old French flair 'scent, odour', from flairier 'to give off a smell', ultimately from Latin fragrāre 'to smell sweet' (same root as fragrant). The word entered English meaning the sense of smell, especially a hound's — and from 'a nose for something' came the modern 'instinctive talent'.
flair 來自古法語 flair「氣味」，動詞 flairier「發出氣味、嗅」，最終源自拉丁文 fragrāre「散發香氣」——和 fragrant（芬芳的）是同一個根。這個字進入英文時指的就是嗅覺，尤其是獵犬的嗅覺；中文說「對某件事有鼻子」的那種感覺，正好就是它走向「天生的才能」的那條路。所以 flair 一路上都沒離開「不必解釋就感覺得到」這件事。
