When someone does a thing with panache, they do it with style and a kind of happy confidence, so it looks easy and other people cannot help watching. It is not only “good work.” There is a flourish in it, a little show, as if the person is enjoying the doing. A cook who turns a plate with a twist of the wrist, a speaker who lands a last line that makes the room laugh, a footballer who scores and makes it look simple: that is panache. The word feels a bit fancy. You hear it in praise and in reviews more than in the playground. People use it for manner, clothes, writing, and performance, and it is almost always a compliment. Though actually, it first named a plume of feathers on a hat or a helmet — the bit on top — and you can still feel that “look at me, but make it ” in the way we use it now.
