One way to picture it: a face, a voice, or a pair of hands that lets what is inside come out — the feeling is pressed outward where others can read it.
Via Middle French expressif from Latin exprimere "to press out" (ex- "out" + premere "to press") — the inner state is pressed out to where it can be seen.
Middle French expressif < Latin exprimere (as given in the entry's origin note)
