wearing away (rock) · noun · C1
The process by which rock or soil is slowly worn away and destroyed by wind, rain, or the sea.
One way to picture it: water, wind or touching the same surface over and over, taking away a tiny amount each time. No single moment does much damage, but come back years later and a whole cliff face is gone.
From Latin ērōsiō, "a gnawing away," from ērōdō (ē- "away" + rōdō "to gnaw") — the same rōdō behind rodent. The old picture is literally teeth: something small biting at a surface again and again until it is eaten through.
Wiktionary ("erosion", from Middle French erosion, Latin ērōsiō, from ērōdō); Latin rōdō "to gnaw" also gives rodent
