The person who decides what stays and what goes, then shapes the kept pieces into a finished whole. Picture someone with a pile of raw material — text, film, contributions — choosing, cutting, arranging until it's ready to go out. Every sense is some version of that gatekeeper-and-shaper: choosing what's in, leaving out the rest, putting the rest together.

From the word’s history

From Latin 'editor' — 'one who gives out, who puts forth', from 'edere' (e- 'out' + 'dare' to give): the person who brings a work out into the world. Choosing and shaping material so it can be put forth sits right on that root.

newspaper/magazine editor · noun · B2

The person in charge of a newspaper or magazine, who decides what goes into it.

film/video editor · noun · B2

A person who gets a film, TV show, or recording ready by choosing what to keep and putting the parts together.

editing software · noun · B2

A computer program that lets you change saved information, such as text or pictures.
