1. 1

A proofreader is the person who reads through writing that is nearly ready — a book, a newspaper, a website — in order to catch mistakes before it goes out. They look for spelling, missing words, strange , and numbers that do not add up. The work itself is proofreading; the person is the proofreader. The proof here is not “evidence in court.” In printing, a proof is a test copy of the page, and the reader of that proof is the proofreader. Though actually, many proofreaders today work on a screen, not on paper, but the old name stayed. It is a workplace word, not a fancy one.
