You can picture a book laid out one day at a time — a page or a line for each date, waiting to be filled in. What goes on those dated pages is what splits the word: either what already happened to you and how you felt about it, or what is still coming and where you have to be. Same book, same day-by-day frame, facing backwards or forwards.
