An autobiography is a book in which someone about their own life — or that kind of book in general. The writer is both the and the person the story is about. Famous people write them after a public life; ordinary people write them too, to keep family memory. It is close to a memoir, though a memoir often covers one stretch of life, while an autobiography tries to tell the life as a whole. A biography is different: someone else it. People sometimes say “autobiography” for a film or a talk that does the same job, but the core use is the book.

組成auto- (Greek αὐτός, “self”) + bio (Greek βίος, “life”) + -graphy (Greek -γραφία, from γράφω, “write”): writing your own life. Biography came through New Latin biographia; English then added auto-.
