One way to hold crested: there is something sitting on top, right at the highest point, and it marks the thing it sits on. On a bird it is a of feathers on the crown of the head. On old armour it was the plume fixed to the top of the helmet, and that plume became the badge a family put on its shield and later on its paper and its gates. Crested always means the thing is carrying that top mark.
