Think of a thing sitting inside a frame: you can't really read the thing until you see what surrounds it — the time, place, people, and events woven around it. 'Context' is that surrounding weave that lets a fact make sense.

From Latin 'contexere' = to weave together (con- 'together' + texere 'to weave', the same root as 'textile' and 'text'). The core picture is literally threads woven around a point.
