Prohibition is an official rule or law that says something is not allowed - a ban. You'll hear it in phrases like 'the prohibition of smoking in restaurants.' Written with a capital P, 'Prohibition' also refers to a famous period in United States history, from 1920 to 1933, when making and selling alcohol was completely illegal across the whole country - a period often shown in movies about gangsters from that era.
