At the heart of code is a system of agreed signs that stands for something else — letters, numbers, or symbols where each one means a particular thing only people who know the system can read. From that one idea you get two branches: a secret/labelling system of signs (passwords, ID numbers, area codes, the instructions a computer reads), and a separate, older branch where 'code' means an agreed set of rules for how people should behave.
