1. 1n/ˈkrɪstʃən/follower of Jesus Christ基督徒

A person who believes in Jesus Christ and follows what he taught.

Example

About a third of the students at the school are Christians.

    中文翻譯大約三分之一的那所學校的學生是基督徒。

This is the person word. It can simply name what religion someone belongs to, the way you would write it on a form or say it about your family. It can also say something stronger: that this person really tries to live by what Jesus taught. In standard use the word covers a very wide group — Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox believers are all Christians. Write it with a capital C. The religion itself is Christianity, and the two words are easy to mix up.

  2. 2a/ˈkrɪstʃən/of the Christian religion基督教的

Connected with the Christian religion — with its beliefs, its churches, its books, its music, or the people who follow it.

    這個 Christian 放在名詞前面,說明那樣東西屬於基督教。像 the Christian church、a Christian school、Christian music、a Christian minister。它就只是一個標籤,沒有稱讚也沒有批評的意思。要大寫。這是最常見、最中性的形容詞用法。日常看到 Christian 加一個名詞,多半就是這一種。宗教本身是 Christianity,形容詞才是 Christian,寫的時候要分清楚。

Here the word sits in front of a noun and says which religion that thing belongs to: the Christian church, a Christian school, Christian music, a Christian minister. It is a plain label. It does not praise the thing and it does not criticise it. Keep the capital C. This is the everyday adjective, so if you are not sure which adjective sense you are looking at, this is usually the one.

  3. 3a/ˈkrɪstʃən/kind and decent厚道

Kind, fair and decent in the way you treat other people. Used about how someone acts, not about what religion they belong to, and often written with a small c.

這個用法跟一個人信什麼宗教沒有關係。它在講一個人待人厚不厚道。背後的想法可以想成:基督教教人要善待別人,久了之後,「很 Christian」就被拿來說「很有良心、很厚道」。最常出現在兩種句子裡。一種是稱讚:That is very Christian of you。一種是責備:That was not a very Christian thing to do。責備那一種特別常見,語氣像長輩在唸你,不算重話。例句把它寫成小寫的 christian,可見它離宗教已經有一段距離了。

This use says nothing about a person's faith. It says the act was a decent one. The idea behind it can be thought of like this: Christian teaching tells people to be kind, so a kind act gets called a Christian act. You meet it most often in two shapes. One is praise: That's very Christian of you. The other is a complaint: That wasn't a very Christian thing to do. The complaining shape is common, and it lands as a soft telling-off rather than an insult. The example itself writes it with a small c, which shows how far this use has moved from the religion.
