You can picture two separate things being pressed together until they hold as one piece: two boards under glue, two atoms in a molecule. Nothing is tied on the outside; the hold is between the surfaces themselves. Once it sets, pulling them apart takes real force. Every other use of bonding can be read off that one picture — only the two things change.

Two branches

noun · B2

The joining of two things so that they hold together: atoms holding on to each other inside a substance, or two surfaces stuck firmly together with glue or heat.

noun · B2

The slow growth of a close, warm relationship between two or more people, or between an animal and its young, as they spend time together and share things.
