Picture the short, everyday word for a two-wheeled thing you sit on and ride. Bike is the casual name — bicycle is what it says on the box, bike is what people actually say. Because it is the relaxed word, it stretches easily: to the machine, to the riding, and even into a spoken phrase that has nothing to do with cycling.
