One way to picture it: something is being re-fitted so it works in a place it wasn't originally made for. The Latin root aptus means 'fitted, suited', and ad- means 'towards' — so the picture is of moving something towards a good fit with new surroundings.
From Latin adaptare — ad- 'to, towards' + aptare 'to fit', from aptus 'fitted, suited' (the same root behind apt and aptitude). The literal sense is 'to fit something to something else'.
來自拉丁文 adaptare:ad-(朝向)+ aptare(使合適),字根 aptus 就是「合身、適合」的意思,和 apt、aptitude 同源。字面上就是「把某物調到跟另一個東西合得起來」——這個「合身」的畫面一直留在現代的 adaptation 裡。
Wiktionary / Online Etymology Dictionary — Latin adaptare, from ad- + aptare (aptus 'fitted').
