Picture something being turned right around so it comes out as a different thing — an attic becomes a bedroom, dollars become euros, one form flips into another.

From the word’s history

From Latin convertere 'to turn around, transform' — con- 'together' + vertere 'to turn'. Every sense keeps that literal 'turn one thing into another': change of form, turning to a new faith, turning a try into points.
