A hectare is a unit for measuring how much land you have, not how long something is. One hectare is 10,000 square metres — a square 100 metres on each side. Farmers, forest reports, and city plans use it; you write it as ha after the number: 3 ha. It is the normal metric word for fields and big plots. You would not measure a bedroom in hectares; that stays in square metres. In Taiwan you will see it on , building land, and park sizes. People who still think in acres may say a hectare is about two and a half acres — though actually most students here never need acres, so it is safer to remember 10,000 m² and leave acres alone. The word is technical and calm, not slang.
組成Borrowed from French hectare, formed from Ancient Greek hekatón (“hundred”) + are. Equivalent to hect- + are: hect- means a hundred, and an are is 100 square metres, so a hectare is a hundred ares, which is 10,000 m².
