成就
Picture a long climb that finally reaches the top. `Achievement` is what you can point at when you get there — not the wish, not the effort in the middle, but the finished thing standing at the end of your own work. The word can look at that moment in two ways: the thing you now have, or the reaching of it.
From Old French achever "to finish, complete", from the phrase à chef (venir) "to come to a head", ultimately Latin ad caput. The noun achievement enters English in the late 1400s meaning "a finishing"; the countable "thing achieved" sense appears around the 1590s — which is why the modern word still splits along those two lines.
achievement 來自古法語 achever「完成、做完」,而 achever 出自片語 à chef (venir),字面是「來到頭部、走到盡頭」(chef 就是拉丁語 caput「頭」)。名詞 achievement 在 1400 年代末進入英文時,意思是「完成這件事」;到 1590 年代左右才多出「完成的那個東西」。今天這個字的兩個意思,正好就是當年的兩層。
