A wordsmith is someone who is really good with words — a person who can pick exactly the right word and build a sentence that lands. Writers, speechwriters, advertising copywriters, lyricists, good journalists: all wordsmiths. The picture inside the word is a blacksmith at an anvil, hammering hot metal into shape. That image is the whole point: it says writing well is craft and labour, not magic. So calling someone a wordsmith praises their skill and their care, but not necessarily their imagination — you would call a great stylist a wordsmith more readily than a great storyteller. 'She's a real wordsmith' means her sentences are beautifully made. Watch the tone, though, because it swings. Most often it is warm praise. But it can turn slightly dry or even mocking, especially in politics and business: 'that's just wordsmithing' means someone is polishing the words to dodge the real problem. Same word, opposite feeling — you tell them apart by the situation. It is also a verb, mostly in offices: to wordsmith something is to fiddle with its wording to get it right. 'Can you wordsmith this paragraph before we send it?' The verb almost always carries that flavour of small careful edits, not real rewriting.
