A goldsmith is someone who makes things from gold — rings, cups, chains, and other objects — or who sells that kind of work. The second half, smith, is an old word for a person who shapes metal. A works with iron and a heavy hammer; a goldsmith works with gold, which is softer, and uses smaller, finer tools. In older times some goldsmiths also looked after other people’s gold, like a very early bank; later, real banks took over that job. Today the word still names the craft, and Goldsmith is also a family name. It sounds a little older and more about the making than jeweller, which is the usual shop word — though actually a jeweller may work with many stones and metals, while goldsmith points especially to gold. It is a job word, not slang.
組成gold + smith. From Old English goldsmiþ. A smith shapes metal. English once also borrowed French words for this job, but goldsmith is the one that stayed.
