A blacksmith is a person who makes and repairs things of iron. The best-known job is horseshoes, but a blacksmith also makes gates, tools, hooks, and other heavy iron work. They heat the iron in a fire until it is soft, then hit it into shape. The black is the dark colour of iron after it has been in the forge, not the person’s clothes or skin. Smith means a worker who shapes metal by striking it; it is related to smite, “to hit”. You still meet real blacksmiths, but the word can also feel historical — village forges, cowboy films, museum days. It is a job name: a little old in flavour, but still the right word for the craft.
