One way to hold whoopee: it begins as a noise, not as a meaning. Good news lands, and the sound jumps out of someone before they have chosen any words — hands up, voice loud, one syllable of pure delight. That noise is the whole of the word when it stands alone. When it is put inside 'make whoopee', the shout seems to stand in for the occasion that caused it: the kind of night that is loud enough to shout about. British and American speakers then take that loud night in two different directions.
