Hooray is a happy shout. You cry it out when something good happens: a goal, a win, news you wanted. Hurrah and are other spellings of the same cheer; in speech none of them is “more correct.” Groups also shout Hip hip hooray! It is informal and bright. You would not put it in a serious letter except to show that someone shouted it. As a noun, a hooray is that shout itself. Where the word first came from is unknown (late 1600s). It may be tied to German and other northern European hurra / hoera; a link to older huzzah is possible but doubtful.
